Where I'm At

It's been a busy week here at SOS towers, so apart from the keeping-the-wolf-from-the-door opportunism of my previous post (apologies to those of you wondering why I broke off my musical journey into space for an entirely unrelated Top Ten... but I had to find some way to afford the Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus Volume 2) things have been rather quiet on the blogging front.

That's not to say I've not been writing blog posts. I've actually been employed to write them for my University (where I'm currently studying my PGCE). There's not a whole lot of money in it and I'm only writing one post a week, but every little helps... as I believe one of our Evil Corporate Overloads has it. My Uni Blog is probably of very little interest to anyone reading this (hell, Sunset Over Slawit is probably of very little interest to anyone reading this), but should you have a spare five minutes, you can always click here.

Meanwhile, for those of you wondering why I haven't posted my review of The Avengers (not "Marvel Avengers Assemble" - an idiotic title made created by idiots who believe even bigger idiots might confuse it with Patrick MacNee and Honor Blackman), the truth is I need to see it again first. Or rather, I need to see it properly first. Because, through an unfortunate series of circumstances entirely beyond my control, I ended up watching it the first time in 3D. Yes, I knew that would be a mistake, but I thought I'd be able to ignore the stupid fx and just enjoy the film. Unfortunately, this wasn't to be, and I spent the entire time feeling twice removed from the film, constantly aware that I was watching something and struggling so much to focus on the dark and blurry (i.e. 3D) images that I was unable to immerse myself in the story or even follow the dialogue. So my review of the film - at this point - would be far more negative than expected. I'm hoping that will change once I've seen it the way God intended us to watch movies... because what I could make out through the unfocussed murk looked like it had a fair bit of potential. Just not in 3D.

Book Review: I, Patridge by Alan Partridge

There were sections of Alan Patridge's autobiography (ghost-written by Rob & Neil Gibbons, Steve Coogan and Armanda Iannucci) which I found heartbreakingly sad. The foreword, for example, is little more than a bland employer's reference which describes our hero as "honest and trustworthy... a relatively good ambassador for the station... with an average of 1.5 sick days taken per year of employment". The joke, of course, is that for all Alan's supposed celebrity pals (Bill Oddie and Sue Cook among them), the best he can get anyone to write about the chronicle of his life is "I would have no hesitation in recommending him". That's funny, yes, but I also find it terribly pathetic (in all possible definitions of that word), and it's that pathos which makes the character of Alan Patridge more than just an egomaniac media monster. It makes him tragically real. Especially for someone who's worked in the awful industry of local radio where Alan has spent the majority of his career since he "shot a man through the heart with a gun" on the final episode of his ill-fated BBC TV chat show.

I, Partridge is a hilarious pastiche of the kind of woeful celebrity memoir that clogs the bestseller lists around Christmas, and like many such books it's most successful in the earlier chapters (revealing insight's into Alan's childhood) and the mid-section (the material already immortalised in Alan's various TV outings). The gags-per-page ratio drops towards the end as Alan's career slumps further into obscurity as mid-morning present on North Norfolk Digital (North Norfolk's Best Music Mix), but there are some very funny moments along the way and plenty of hideously overwitten prose. My favourite bit was the blackly comic role call of young Alan's first radio comrades, including...

Brian Golding. 'Bonkers' Bri combined a wacky sense of humour with a genuine mental illness and went on to co-host Drive Time on Signal Radio before killing himself in 1991.

There's something to Alan's pompous, self-important tone that makes me cringe for myself too. Reading his book comes a little too close to reading a really bad blog (say, for example, this one). He's even included his own playlist, to be enjoyed during specific chapters, featuring all the usual suspects (Midge Ure, Fleetwood Mac, Classix Nouveau, and, of course, Abba) having long since reached "a startling but unshakeable conclusion: no genuinely good music has been created since 1988". It almost me want to chuck in blogging and go find something less embarrassing to do with my time. Maybe we've all got a little bit of Alan in us...

The Mixtape Lives On... Somewhere Else

Keeping two separate blogs running was a nice idea, but much as I've enjoyed writing about my favourite music over at The Mixtapes Lives On, I've had to knock that blog on the head. Which means I'll be writing about my favourite new (and old) musical discoveries here at Sunset Over Slawit again (and bringing back the Top Tens, which should please some of you). But if you want to know what else I'm listening to, you could do a whole lot worse than follow me over at This Is My Jam.

Davey introduced me to this site last week and it's already my favourite social networking thingy on the interweb. It's such a simple idea, I can't believe nobody thought of it already. You just choose your favourite song and make it your current Jam... then follow a bunch of friends and other interesting weirdoes you've met online... and voila, you instantly have a radio station programmed by people of discerning taste with an ever-changing, always fascinating playlist of wonders.

The site has already introduced me to some great new music, beginning with Pris, a spiky, punky two girl band from London who list among their major influences Kenickie, Angelica, The Waitresses, Deborah Harry and "Madonna When She Was Young". You can hear it all in their debut single...

...and better still, you can get a free copy of that single (a double A-side with The Better You Look The More You See) from the Pris website. And no, I don't mean a free download... I mean a free CD! Gotta like their style...

See What Happens When I Take A Week Off...

...my hits go through the roof. The stats are in, and I had more visitors last week than Sunset Over Slawit has ever seen before. And I only bloody posted once! (Thanks for all the votes, by the way.) Maybe it's time I sat back and let this blog take care of itself...

Nah. Sorry.

Watch the visits go down now I've actually got something to witter on about again...

My Week On The Web

Over at The Mixtape Lives On, we're gearing up for 2012 with my favourite songs about the End of the World. This week, that's included classic offerings from Johnny Cash, The Clash, The Handsome Family and Barry Maguire. We also played another great List Song by The Jim Carroll Band (about all his dead friends), new music from Low Roar - with the sublime title of "Friends Make Garbage, True Friends Take It Out" and continued my countdown of the best albums of 2011 with Noah & The Whale.

Elsewhere on the web this week, Dan from All That Comes With It broke his vow to never blog again by setting up a rival Slawit blog. Hey, I'm not worried - I can stand the competition!

Ryan and James Lindsay, my brothers from down under began their appeal to gather financing for their short film Soap - the story of a man who must wash his hands every hour, on the hour. Being a little bit OCD myself, I can sympathise...

Sam Johnson began teasing his new comic book...

And I discovered this year's heaviest Christmas record from Krashkarma...

...the music may not be to your liking, but the video's worth watching to see what happens when McCauley Culkin meets Freddie Krueger.

That was my week on the web - how was yours?

What's Another Year?

Sunset Over Slawit is five today, and it's been a pretty tumultuous year here at SOS-towers. This was the year I lost my job, crashed my car and fell foul of the local nutter.

On the plus side, I began training for a new profession, launched a successful comic and started a new music blog.

That last one seems a pretty crazy thing to do as the blogosphere itself continues to shrink (we said goodbye to RB and Dan this year, among others) and my own available blogging time decreases (it's amazing how much more free time there was in the day when I had a full time job). But The Mixtape Lives On is a fast-fix for my blogging cravings and I've always preferred writing about music to just about any other subject. Makes you wonder whether this blog will see a sixth birthday... I guess only time will tell. With the exception of Steve, I doubt anybody would really miss it.

Yay! Happy blogbirthday, me! Anyone for cake?

My Week On The Web

On The Mixtape Lives On this week I played more songs about teachers from The Smiths, Leonard Cohen, The Trashcan Sinatras and Madness. I was also Keeping It Peel with Billy Bragg and agreed with Half Man Half Biscuit that Hell Is Other People (in French). I also saluted one of my favourite albums of the year and the greatest recorded ever recorded.

Over at Thoughtballoons, I chose this week's character: my ultimate cartoon hero, Wile E. Coyote. Read my 1-page story here.

Elsewhere on the web this week...

There's a nasty Halloween story from Steve Green's Twisted Quill...

Rob started making Halloween masks (collect them all!)...

Larissa from Condemned To Rock & Roll returned to the blogosphere and launched a new music blog with her friend Laura, From A High Horse.

Nobody wants to play paintball with The Punisher...

Two legends of the music blogosphere finally meet face to face...

The Sagittarian snaps flying teddies in NZ...

And Chris meets some interesting people on the bus.

My Week On The Web

My new comic Too Much Sex & Violence #1 is out now. I'll be giving it an official launch here on SOS soon, but if you'd like to pick up a copy before then, go here now.

Over on The Mixtape Lives On this week, I finished up my list of songs about mixtapes. I'll be counting down the top ten here shortly. I also discovered an excellent new record by Cosmo Jarvis, unearthed a free download EP from LaFaro, The Plea and Ash, and dedicated a song to my right hand man, Davey Metcalfe.

Elsewhere on the web...

The Poet-Laura-eate went slamming in Cheltenham...

Shocked at the news that the next series of Doctor Who won't start till Autumn 2012, TimeWarden considers chucking out his telly...

Kippers was annoyed that nobody laughed at his twitter jokes (I did).

The Weekly Themed Art Blog boldly went where no artists have gone before (well, apart from the ones who have)...

Swiss Toni took on the latest trends in women's footwear (brave man)...

There was a nasty knife accident in Kelloggsville (not for the squeamish)....

...and this week's thoughtballoons choice (from Max) was Static Shock. Read my 1 page story here.

That was my week on the web... how was yours?

My Week On The Web

The Mixtape Lives On... with new music from Fountains of Wayne, a free download of an entire Nirvana tribute album, plus loads more songs about mixtapes from The Cardigans, Tift Merritt, The Pooh Sticks and The Mamas & The Papas. I also dedicated a song to Steve from Bloggertropolis... from another hard luck Steven. (Congrats also to Steve on his first paying gig... which he used to talk about penises.)

Over at thoughtballoons it was Jimmy Olsen week, as suggested by Grant. You can read my one-page post-no-more-Crisis story right here.

I feel bad that I've not had any time to review any Comics On The Ration lately... but Rob keeps on fighting the good fight. Read what he thought about Jonah Hex: The Six Gun War here.

Elsewhere...

Brian Bolland joins the blogosphere...

Adam began a countdown of 31 of his favourite songs...

Rob began betting on the X-Factor... (I hate the X-Factor, but I like Rob)...

Martin took to the radio to promote his book...

The excitement continued in Thunder Brother: Soap Division as Sally and Jake arrive in Westenders...

Lee looked at the treatment of women in the new look DC Comics...

And Tom discovered this excellent trailer for the maddest Batman flick yet...

And finally... Too Much Sex & Violence #1 is coming. A little later than scheduled, but all good things etc. Watch this space.

My Week On The Web

This was the week I started my new music blog, The Mixtape Lives On. One song a post, one post a day, endlessly surprising, always something new. So far we've had a free download from Billy Bragg; songs about mixtapes from Bow Wow Wow and Los Campesinos!; new music from The Slow Readers Club; and a cracking cover version of Sexual Healing by The Hot 8 Brass Band.

We also wished a very happy 5th blog-birthday to my favourite music blogger: JC, The Vinyl Villain.

Over at thoughtballoons, Danial chose H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu as the character we all had to write a 1-page comic script about this week. I looked for horror in the most everyday scenario imaginable... because that's always where it's worst. Read my story here.

Elsewhere in the blogosphere this week...

Scott Pilgrim met Ramona's 8th boyfriend...

An old pal launched a new blog full of drunken misanthropy (and believe me: he isn't joking)...

Nota Bene had a lucky escape...

Dad Who Writes considered whether we want to read more toilet breaks and menstruation in our fiction...

Steve made the ludicrous assertion that Big Bird would win against Octavia The Ostrich in a cage fight (he couldn't be more wrong)...

...and Rob relaunched The Negative Channel... because what the internet really needs right now is more negativity.

(If I haven't mentioned you or your blog this week, it's not that I didn't find it interesting or entertaining. I'll get to you in weeks to come. Honest.)

That was my week on the web. How was yours?

The Mixtape Lives On...

...is the name of my new music blog which launches today. I've been writing about music here on Sunset Over Slawit since the very second post but lately those posts have become longer and longer and taken up a much bigger part of the blog than is healthy. Things like my musically themed Top Tens and the What I'm Listening To posts take ages to write and are probably of limited interest to many regular SOS readers. So I decided to set up a blog where I can write about music to my heart's content. Hopefully this will give me the outlet I want but also take up a little less of my time. I'm only allowing myself to write about one song per post... not ten!

There will be new music. There will be old music. There will be cracking cover versions and free downloads. There will be songs linked by a theme, starting with Songs About Mixtapes. When I've got enough of them, I'll compile a Top Ten here, but if you pop over to The Mixtape Lives On, you'll get to vote on that beforehand.

I'd love it if you'd join me, bookmark me, give me a plug or a link, or add me to your blogroll (particularly if you're a music blogger yourself). If music's not your thing, rest assured Sunset Over Slawit will continue to bring you all the other rubbish from my life. And if you only want the music, now I've filtered that out for you.

How can writing two blogs take less time than writing one? Stick around, I intend to show you...

Music I Haven't Been Listening To This Week

I haven't actually been here this week. I've gone south... quite a long way, but not quite as far as France. This may also explain why I haven't popped over to your blog to be as abusive as I usually am. I've been elsewhere. All this week's posts were written last week and posted by the SOS Rol-bot.

That's why there isn't a Music I've Been Listening To feature today. I'm stopping writing about music... in fact, I'm going to be writing about it more than ever.

The Mixtape Lives On...

I'll tell you more about that, and where I've been this week, very soon.

Here's an appropriate song to fill the gap...

Book Review - Dark Steps

Dark Steps is a short anthology of stories from fellow blogger and writer Martin Pond, available to download or read on old-fashioned dead trees, if you're a traditionalist like me.

The collection opens with The Waiting Room, a scary slice of future-shock spiced with sharp ideas and a chilling, utterly unexpected, denouement. It's probably my favourite story here, but that's not to detract from the delights that lie ahead.

Dream Feed will surely raise hairs on the necks of new parents everywhere as a spooky voice is heard over the baby monitor by a sleep-deprived father.

Near-Death Experience, which I've read before on Martin's blog, reminds me of M. Knight Shyamalan's Unbreakable - and there's no finer comparison in this genre.

The longest story here is The Inheritance, a clever piece of writing in which a son visits his dying police man father in hospital only to face some shocking revelations. The twist is obvious to the reader long before it hits the protagonist, but there's much worse to come. In his foreword, Martin claims it's his least favourite story in the collection, yet it lingered in my mind long after I set the book aside.

Three other stories and an extract from Martin's work-in-progress novel, Drawn To The Deep End, complete the anthology. It's an excellent collection of unexpected tales told in everyday surroundings with a vein of dark humour running just below the surface.

To find out more, visit Martin's writing blog or Pip's Pages, his original home on the web.

Title Fight - Drive - And the winner is...

Thanks to everybody who voted in last week's inaugural Title Fight post to find your favourite 'Drive' song. There were six very different songs to choose from, all with the exact same title - by The Cars, REM, Incubus, Rialto, Alan Jackson and The Gaslight Anthem.

As expected, it was a tightly fought battle between the first two artists, with some support for Incubus and token votes for Rialto and The Gaslight Anthem. Sadly, poor old Alan Jackson was left out in the cold... though Mark did ask me if he was married to Carol in Eastenders.

REM led the way most of the week before a sudden surge of Cars fans closed the gap at the last minute... leading to a steward's enquiry... before the result was finally declared.

The Cars & REM - joint winners.

It was a fun little exercise and I hope to bring it back soon as part of my new Music Blog 'The Mixtape Lives On'. More on that soon. Bet you can hardly wait.

What I'm Wearing Today...

So I'm perusing Louise's copy of Marie Claire on the toilet the other night and once I'd finished reading about "Women Obsessed With Every Man They Meet" and "Wedding Night Sex Confessions" (honestly, you women, you're so sex-obsessed!) I stumbled across an interesting article called "I Blogged My Way To Millions - A Guide To Making Your Fortune Online". Well, naturally I was hooked... this could be the answer to all my unemployment woes. I mean, hey, I write a blog anyway... imagine if I could become a millionaire just by doing something I'm already doing!

Unfortunately, many of the ideas for blogging my way to millions were a little out of my league (they involved moving to Hollywood and schmoozing actors or being reborn as someone with a vaguely interesting lifestyle)... but one proved inspirational. Apparently there's this woman in (I can't remember where and Louise has taken the magazine back now) who started a blog which involved nothing more than posting a photo of whatever outfit she was wearing to work that day. Her blog's become such a success she's been able to quit her day job and concentrate 100% of her time to wearing clothes, taking photos of herself wearing clothes, and posting photos of herself wearing clothes online.

Well, two can play at that game, love...

This is what I'm wearing today. Little Lebowski Urban Achievers from Last Exit To Nowhere. Brown cords from... the shop. Slippers.

Here's what I wore yesterday. Incredible Hulk T-shirt from some comic shop that had a sale on. Same brown cords. (Why would I wear a pair of trousers for just 1 day?) Slippers.

Here's what I'll be wearing tomorrow. My new Spidey T-shirt from the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #100, by John Romita Senior. Same brown cords. (What? They won't be dirty yet.) Slippers.

Here's what I'll be wearing on Thursday. Joker T-shirt by Hahahahaha Hooohahahahaha Hehehahahahaa! Same brown cords. (Yes, I do change my underpants daily.) Slippers.

Here's what I'll be wearing on Friday. Except I probably won't because I'm always too scared to wear this T-shirt in public. I bought it from the comedian Mundo Jazz. I'm always worried people won't get the irony and I'll get either beaten up or arrested. Same brown cords (they'll go in the wash on Saturday, all right?) Slippers.

Great stuff - now I'll just sit back and watch the cash roll in! Why didn't I think of this years ago?

Blogger Ate My Hamster

So I had all sorts of exciting blog posts planned for you this week, then The Great Blogger Crash of Friday the 13th happened and blogger ate the posts I'd been lovingly constructing on Thursday... including my Top Ten Mother-Funster* songs and my review of Essential Super-Villain Team-Up over at Comics On The Ration. It also ate the comments left by Vicus and RB on the Rabbit, Run post. Sorry, guys!

I don't know about you, but I don't back up my blog posts and I have neither the time, the energy nor the inclination to start re-writing them from scratch. So just imagine they were the best blog posts you ever read, everybody commented, and you still feel a warm glow deep down in your special places every time you remember reading them.

Did you lose something precious in the crash too?

Bad blogger.

(I'm not kidding - I'd actually compiled a list of my favourite MF songs including Prince's Sexy MF, Frank Turner's Heartless Bastard Mother-Funster and Martha Wainwright's Bloody Mother-Fumbling Asshole. Sadly, that list may well be lost forever now.)

My Personal Apology To Bill Hicks (and you)

By the way if anyone here is in advertising or marketing... kill yourself.

No, no, no it's just a little thought. I'm just trying to plant seeds. Maybe one day, they'll take root - I don't know. You try, you do what you can. Kill yourself.

Seriously though, if you are, do.

Aaah, no really, there's no rationalisation for what you do and you are Satan's little helpers. Okay - kill yourself - seriously. You are the ruiner of all things good, seriously. No this is not a joke, you're going, "there's going to be a joke coming," there's no fucking joke coming. You are Satan's spawn filling the world with bile and garbage. You are fucked and you are fucking us. Kill yourself. It's the only way to save your fucking soul, kill yourself.

That's Bill Hicks there. In case you didn't know. And I do agree with him. Which is the worst kind of irony.

I've worked in advertising for over 15 years now, but that's the day job. I've always tried to draw a line between that and my private creative work. But I'm sorry... I'm so sorry, Bill... I'm weakening...

I know what all the marketing people are thinking right now, "Oh, you know what Bill's doing, he's going for that anti-marketing dollar. That's a good market, he's very smart."

Oh man, I am not doing that. You fucking evil scumbags!

"Ooh, you know what Bill's doing now, he's going for the righteous indignation dollar. That's a big dollar. A lot of people are feeling that indignation. We've done research - huge market. He's doing a good thing."

Goddammit, I'm not doing that, you scum-bags! Quit putting a goddamn dollar sign on every fucking thing on this planet!

"Ooh, the anger dollar. Huge. Huge in times of recession. Giant market, Bill's very bright to do that."

You may remember this post from a few weeks back wherein I got all self-righteous about not selling out, refusing to run advertising on this blog or suck the corporate teet.

Yeah, well, that was before the car ended up costing me £420 for a new flux capacitor. And there's a holiday coming up. And I haven't bought any new clothes since winkle pickers were in. Principles are one thing... holes in your shoes are another thing entirely. And it's not as though my creative side is reaping fortunes... so until it does...

Consider this post an apology. An apology to Bill Hicks, and an apology to you. Because you may notice a few subtle advertisingy things cropping up here from time to time over the next few weeks. Because I really need the money. Feel free to ignore them and just go on about your business. And try not to hate me too much...

This Blog Is Not For Sale

A couple of interesting emails have plopped into my inbox lately. I guess this blog has been going long enough, gets enough daily hits, and ranks high enough in Google Analytics (or whatever) that it has a certain perceived value. I never understand how you value a website - how Facebook or Twitter can be sold for billions for example. I know it's got something to do with the evil industry, but as my own relationship with the evil industry is such a painful one, I prefer not to delve too deeply. Anyway, while Sunset Over Slawit isn't quite at the stage where Aaron Sorkin is penning a screenplay based around my life, it's obviously been noticed by somebody. To wit, email #1...

We have a client who would like to pay you for the opportunity to post some of their content on your website. All of the content is professionally produced and you can select from pieces relevant to your audience.

The result is you get some free, interesting content for your readers while getting paid.

In return our client is asking for one link that they specify at the bottom of the content (no porn or gambling). Feel free to contact me with any concerns or clarifications you may have.

My first reaction to this was... really? What client? How much?

My second reaction was... hang on, WHY? Why would someone want to use this silly little blog to hawk their filthy wares? OK, so I'm now getting about 200 hits a day (though I have no way of knowing how many of those are spambots), but many of those hits must be the same people coming back again and again. Hell, half of them are probably just Steve. Surely there are more cost-effective ways of blowing your marketing budget than throwing it at me to squeeze the occasional ad for Pepsi or Apple in between My Top Ten Furniture Polish Songs and Why I Hate Audi Drivers post #463?

(Neither Pepsi nor Apple - nor Audi - gave me any money to mention them in the paragraph above. I actually prefer Coke, Microsoft and any other form of vehicular transportation ever invented to the brands in question... which I why I chose them. To avoid favouritism.)

My third thought was... surely those people who visit this blog every day do so exactly because they want to read content written by me? Which, given that my goal in life is to be a writer - and have my writing read by others - fills me with joy and pride and a buzzing in my nether-regions equivalent to Kate Winslet brushing past me in a negligee with a mint condition copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 tucked in her armpit. (In short, thank you all.) BUT if the reason you come here is to read me... why would you want to read some "free, interesting content" written by somebody else with the sole purpose of getting you to click a link and buy something?

So, thanks, but no thanks. If you want to pay me to write something, even something that promotes your wares... I'll give it a shot. I've gratefully received some nice free books, graphic novels and music as a result of writing this blog - and written about them whenever I had something worthwhile to say. But just copying and pasting someone else's words and using the goodwill of Sunset Over Slawit to peddle some old bollocks I have no interest in whatsoever... thanks, but I get enough of that in the day job.

But wait... we're not done yet! Because then comes email #2...

I represent a firm that purchases entire blogs, that is, the URL as well as the content of the blog. We use these blogs to improve the search engine rankings of our clients.

Our firm requires that the blog has correct English and grammar. It must have original content (not duplicate content from other blogs or websites) as well as having no pornography or other distasteful content. In addition, the blog must be able to be found on Google.

If you are interested in selling your blog(s), please reply with your URL(s) as well as your asking price(s). An actual offer for your blog would happen after a detailed analysis of it that showed that it met all of our criteria.

The email then goes on to suggest that, given the right t&c's, and based upon my current Google Ranking, I could make around $500 from this deal. Which isn't to be sniffed at, I suppose - especially when you're as skint as I am.

Except...

Well, my first thought was "bollocks".

My second thought was... WHY? Why would you, as a legitimate business, wish to purchase a blog with an unsexy URL of http://moviebookreview-s.blogspot.com/ (hardly Audiscumbags.com, is it?), the content of which varies most weeks between misanthropic short stories, reviews of crap Nicolas Cage movies, and My Top Ten Songs About Global Thermonuclear Destruction? I just do not get it.

But, as we already established earlier this year when I considered moving this blog wholesale to posterous, I'd lose a good chunk of my readers if I wasn't where I've always been, and you all mean far too much to me to piss you off like that for a measly 500 bucks. That's not to say I wouldn't be open to a better offer...

If you enjoyed the free, interesting content above, please consider clicking on this link and spending a stupid amount of money on the aspirational, life-affirming products available there. If you didn't enjoy the free, interesting content above... go take a long walk off a short pier. Who needs you?

New Year... New Beginning... New Blog?

I'm thinking of pulling the plug on this blog.

OK, OK, stop cheering. It's not as good as it sounds.

I recently discovered posterous, a new blogging platform that works like a dream. It combines all the best bits of blogger, tumblr, wordpress et al. with none of the annoying stuff... and best of all, it's the most user-friendly platform ever. Seriously, it took me about an hour in the week before Christmas to upload two pages of PJANG to my wordpress, pfaffing about with resizing and editing html and a site that kept crashing and not allowing me to do what I wanted.

Last week I discovered posterous, and having heard how easy it was, I decided to give it a try... by making the entirety of PJANG #1 available to read online. It took me about 15 minutes to upload all three strips and the results are... well, see for yourself.

I was so impressed that I decided I'd move my whole wordpress site across there... but then I started thinking, maybe I should move Sunset Over Slawit too. This old blog's been feeling a bit tired of late... maybe a new home is just what it needs.

I have some reservations though. I regularly receive between 100 and 150 individual hits a day (which I'm pretty pleased with... but don't ask me who all these readers are, since only about six of them ever leave a comment)... would I lose that silent majority if I moved? Would I have to start again from scratch? Does it really matter?

Then there's the question of splitting up the blog. I know there are people who only come here to read my music posts or top tens. Or my comics stuff. Or my short stories (thank you). Perhaps I should host a separate blog for each? And another just for personal nonsense. And another for ephemera? Or is it better just to keep on bundling everything together in one? Do I even still need a writing blog and an "everything else" blog anymore? Should I just bring it all together under one roof where it can live together in harmony?

I'm still puzzling this one out... though obviously your thoughts would be welcome. Whatever happens, a change is gonna come.

In the meantime, in case you haven't already, READ PJANG #1 FREE HERE. Then please tell your friends. Especially if they're the sort who think People Just Ain't No Good.

Friday Flash - Shooting People Is Good

Today is my fourth Blog Birthday. Four years since I crawled onto the internet and set up this blog, unsure of whether it was something I wanted to be doing, but driven to it by forces beyond my control. Blogging has changed beyond all recognition in that time. It has risen and fallen, and many of its brightest stars have since moved on to twitter, facebook or just quit the internet altogether (or have they?) Maybe the best days of blogging are behind us... or maybe the renaissance is just around the corner. If I could predict anything on the internet, I'd be much richer man than I am now.

Anyway, it's Friday, so time for a #fridayflash. Sadly the weather disruption has ruined my chances of producing a new story for you this week, so here's another repeat, from way back in 2008. Hope you enjoy it...

Shooting People Is Good

Be honest now – you all wanted to shoot somebody today.

Maybe it was your boyfriend, or that dude cut you up on the freeway. Maybe it was a politician – lord knows Lee Harvey set every one of us an example with that. Maybe it was your sister or your ma, your high school gym coach or that jerk in accounts screwed with your expenses four months running. Maybe it was that creep hit on your girl in the roadside, or the motorcycle cop followed you a steady thirty all the way home, or the drunk who threw up all over the steps of your building. Maybe it was Hannah Fucking Montana – seriously, who’d blame you for that?

The who don’t matter. All that matters is we both acknowledge the truth. You wanted to shoot somebody today, and you didn’t. For all those crazy reasons that keep our half-assed excuse for society from drifting into anarchy and chaos. Morals and decency. Conscience and consequence. The law. You didn’t do it, and it’s chewing you up inside. But imagine for one moment you didn’t have to worry about any of that. Imagine you could shoot whomsoever you wanted, whenever the mood took you – without fear of arrest or reprisal or guilt. Imagine you could work out those frustrations in the moment, bask in the swell of satisfaction, gratification… justice…. then move on with your day. Be honest now…

The first time it happened was an accident. I hadn’t seen him and he shouldn’t have been out there. I arrived at the range a little after seven – I was the first one there and Crebbins was still sweeping out the yard. He waved at me from across the compound as I set up. I was eager to try out the new Westley Richards 20 gauge I’d bought from an old-timer out on the Circle Hill Road. Guy was selling off a bunch of old shotguns – said his wife had died so he no longer had any need to keep them in the house. Most of them were crap, but this one… this one was a beauty. 28 inch barrels, nitro-reproofed, with a solid silver safety and red sandalwood stocks. I’d been careful not to go straight for it, gave some consideration to the junk before settling on my jewel. If the old man didn’t know what a peach he had here, I sure as hell wasn’t going to let on. In the end I got it for seventy-five, two cases of ammo thrown in. I could have sold it on for five times that, and maybe I might have done just that. I’m not sentimental about these things, a profit’s a profit. Turns out though, this particular gun was worth a whole lot more.

Like I said, I hadn’t even seen him. No way I could have known he was out there – why would he be? Why would anybody go wandering across a live shooting range, seven in the morning, like he’s taking the air on Main Street? Turns out he was a retard – mentally deficient, like – dragged out into the country on a whim the night before by some reckless kids from Johnstown, then left to find his own way home. Poor fucker couldn’t read the signs, it was simple as that. He just saw the lodge in the distance and started out towards it. A little barbed wire and a few red dangers weren’t going to stop him – he was in a flap, and he wanted his ma. He came climbing right up out of the ditch in front of the target area just as I pulled the trigger on my new Westley for the first ever time.

Those people you wanted to shoot today… how far d’you let that particular fantasy play out? Maybe you lined them up through the hood ornament on your car, maybe you tossed them what Mr. Raymond Chandler used to call The Gunman’s Salute – two fingers and a little click, back of your throat, followed by a mouth-filling boom. Maybe you actually imagined the blood – the stain of it, blotting cross the fabric of their shirt, just like in the movies. You’d have to be pretty far gone to picture the insides of their skull blooming up like fungus from an old tree stump – the full-on ‘NC-17’ special effects – but hate’ll do that to you, and I don’t reckon we know the half of what goes on in most people’s heads but never gets out fully into the light. That’s probably for the best, you ask me. The world’s a scary enough place as is, don’t you think?

The retard’s head didn’t explode or nothing. This is a bird gun we’re talking here, and what would be the point splattering your duck all over the horizon? There’d be nothing left to eat, certainly nothing worth having your picture took with. So a nice, neat hole, no bigger than the end of your forefinger, and down he goes.

“Shit!” Lest you think I’m a callous… some kind of cold-blooded type… well, I’d never shot a man before, and while certainly I’d thought about it just as many times as you have, it’d never been without provocation. This was just some innocent kid, not even playing with the full deck, I had no truck with him. No, he sure as hell shouldn’t have been out there, but don’t for one second think I thought he deserved it.

“Oh Tom, oh Tommy – my god, Tommy, what did you do – what did you…?” That was Crebbins, running out after me across the range, mewling like a just-spayed tomcat, though I knew his concern wasn’t so much for the kid as how this all might lose him his license. That range out in Tilbury closed after an accidental, though rumour has it there was more going on behind the scenes facilitated that particular termination.

“Go call an ambulance!” I shouted back, more to get Crebbins out of my vicinity than because I believed the kid stood a chance. Not many folks survive a headshot, not even from a gun like this. Maybe at a greater distance – but this was the nearest target on the range, little over 15 yards, and sure enough his lights were out by the time I got there. And that hole – that perfect little red-black hole just above his left eyebrow – I couldn’t help but stare into it, though I couldn’t tell you exactly what I expected to see.

What happened next, I don’t rightly recall. After the clarity of that one moment, the rest of the morning blurs away like cream in your coffee. I remember Bob Cornell came out from the Sherriff’s Office; I knew Bob from back in Junior High, we was on the wrestling team together. He was a good man, mostly. He asked me some questions, then he asked ‘em me again, then he said how he’d have to take my gun in as evidence, and I remember how that felt then, like this was the most devastating part of the day, like I just couldn’t abide the loss of that Westley – not for nothing.

“First I need – I need to clean it on out,” I remember saying that, telling him. But that was an excuse. In back of my head, I had this notion – and it’s just as crazy as it sounds now – that if I could get another couple of cartridges in that thing, I could hold off Bob Cornell and his deputy. I could get away, the Westley with me, and hide it where they’d never find it.

Of course he tried to stop me – that was his job. “You’re in shock, Tom, you’re not thinking right. You can’t—“ But he never had won a bout, Bob Cornell, not against me, and I wasn’t about to let him start now.

“Just need to clean it out,” I told him again, “just need to—“ Right then I must of sounded like the kind of idiot goes wandering across shooting ranges seven o’clock in the a.m., but I couldn’t let him take that gun. Even if he pulled his own weapon on me – for tampering with the evidence and that – I couldn’t let him stop me.

So I broke open the action and the spent cartridge popped on out of the breech. Bob Cornell shouted at me to stop. I wasn’t listening. I reached down and plucked out what was left of the hull, then…

Then I was back at the beginning. Bob Cornell, his deputy, the paramedics and all the crime scene boys… they were gone. The sun was lower in the sky and Crebbins was still going round with his broom. It was the quiet hit me first. After all the clamour and palaver the morning had become, I’d forgotten it’d ever been this quiet.

In my hand, two fresh cartridges, waiting to be loaded. I checked my watch: 7.14 a.m. A breeze came out of the pines and stroked cool fingers long the back of my neck. Geese crossed the sky, safe as houses. It wasn’t the season yet anyhows.

“You OK, Tom?” said Crebbins, leaning on the handle of his broom like he was about to start singing ‘Oklahoma!’

I looked around me and off towards the first set of targets. I didn’t need to think this through. There wasn’t any doubt. I knew exactly what had happened.

“What the hell kinda place you running out here, Crebbins – there’s a fucking kid out on the range!”

Crebbins went white, but not as white as he’d been the last time this moment played out. He set out across the grass, still carrying his broom – waving it and shouting at the kid who was walking towards him too now, arms splayed in panic.

“Mister, I’m lost, mister… Where’s Johnstown, mister, where’s 43 Beech Street, where’s my ma, mister, where’s–?”

I knew exactly what had happened, and somewhere deep inside, I knew it’d happen again. Whenever I wanted it to.

Say you could shoot whomsoever you wanted, take out whatever frustrations you had – watch them suffer, watch them die… and then put everything back just the way it was, with nobody any the wiser? Say all you had to do was carry that gun round with you day in day out – get yourself one of them fishing rod cases, one of them zip-up pool cue bags – hell, a fucking violin case, you don’t mind the cliché. Say whenever the mood took you – and you’d probably find it took you a whole lot more as the days went by – you just get out that weapon and hold it straight in their face. Whichever one of them pissed you off most that moment. See the look in their eyes, hear them trying to talk their ways out of whatever they did to upset you in the first place, listen to them beg… begging’s always good… then click. Click – boom. You know what I said earlier ‘bout a bird gun not making much mess? From a distance, no. But get it right up between some bastard’s eyes – right where the sweat off their forehead beads down onto the top of their nose – pull that trigger right then, and you won’t get no pretty little nickel-shaped hole. You’ll get what they deserve. What everyone deserves, one time or another. You know what I’m talking about.

Come on now, be honest with yourselves – given a gun like mine… how many people would you have shot today?
