CLASH OF THE TITANS (2010)

MyRating: YY1/2

Director: Louis Leterrier
Cast: Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Jason Flemyng, Gemma Arterton, Alexa Davalos
MPAA: Rated PG-13 for fantasy action violence, some frightening images and brief sensuality

Perseus (Worthington) is the son of Zeus (Neeson), the King of the gods, and a human mother. Unwanted since a baby, he was raised by a human family that treated him like their own son. When a tragedy strikes his family one day, caused by Hades (Fiennes), the god of the Underworld, Perseus determines one thing in his heart, to avenge Hades for his family. When an opportunity comes, he joins a band of warriors to set off on a journey to defeat Hades, before the god can unleash his ultimate hell, both on Zeus's kingdom and on earth. And the most dangerous journey of humankind begins, as Perseus and the handful warriors step their feet into a world full of horrifying demons, hungry creatures and deathly beasts, that will take away their souls before they can finish their journey.

This movie of the Ancient Greek mythology is one of the most anticipated movies this year. It has a lot of actions, some big battle scenes, and a showcase of enough mythical beasts and demons that will satisfy our eagerness, since this kind of movie is not oftenly made.

However after seeing it, I think in overall the movie is just okay. Nothing's really great. The storyline is what you expect, but there is not enough character development. It feels like you are watching a bunch of people doing a lot of actions and fights along the way till the end, with non-stop music in the background, but you cannot really feel it. What I mean to say is, I did enjoy some of the cool stuffs in this movie, but I could not really connect and feel the characters. The passions or the anger or the sadness are not there, it is just lack of emotions, that makes this movie become plain and dry, regardless how good the action is.

I don't think Sam Worthington made his character shines in this movie (the same way I felt about him in Avatar - the real Jake Sully, not the CGI). His performance is just average. In fact, I didn't see enough charisma in him, not the same as the great charisma shown by Crowe in Gladiator or Butler in 300. I might be wrong (since he's a big name and a very busy man now), it's just my opinion. Neeson and Fiennes, as the gods, were also looked like two big clumsy characters here. The script just didn't offer them much room to show their greatness. And last, the 3D is nothing special.

To sum up, I think this movie is below expectation and far from great. (MJ)
